Distance Nice - San Remo/return: 120 km Climb: 1.000 m+ Main routes: The coast road to Italy, passing through Monaco Close to: Various French and Italian villages near the coast Level of difficulty: Easy-Moderate. Do you dream of cycling cruising at both the French and the Italian Riviera?
It is absolutely a dream that can come true! Cyclists cruise these beautiful coast roads every day and cars are used to cyclists, although I do recommend that you avoid the crowds on the roads during the peak-tourist season in July and August. The route from Nice, if you follow the coast, is taking you through varied sections of uphills, flats and downhills: Bigger towns, small coast towns, amazing landscape stretches, world-famous beaches and a few tunnels before you reach the outer skirts of Ventigmiglia. You can read about the route from Nice to Ventigmiglia here. Every year in March, San Remo hosts the worlds longest one-day professional cycling race: Milan-San Remo. Love for cycling is integrated in the town that has created a 20 km long cycling path that follows the old train tracks along the coast and is closed off from 4-wheels traffic. On a warm day, it is like cycling through a cooling Spa, as you cycle through the iconic cycling/pedestrians' tunnel that is 1-2 km long and a part of the cycling path. Cycling stories from the region are displayed throughout the tunnel that has been designed by and for cycling lovers. The path starts near Ospedaletti. Look out for the sign from the main road as it is a bit hidden. In San Remo you find several pretty located beach-side cafés designed for cyclists and their bikes! :) If you want to combine the tour with more climbing - search for village routes in the back country or cycle from Nice-Menton via Col d'Eze and la Turbie. If you want to ease the cycling, you can easily make it shorter if you go back to Nice by train from Ventigmiglia (cycles are free to carry on the train - look for the special doors for bike-people). Season: Recommended to cycle out of the main tourist season due to much traffic July-September. Tip: Bring lights as you pass through multiple tunnels. Cycling through 3 countries in one day-ride you could also call this ride. Or the 3 C's carbonloading tour: Croissant in France to load your energy in the morning, a Cappucino in Italy after a pizza slize when you hit the village café in Dolceaqua and finish off with a glas of Champagne on a fancy bar terrasse in Monaco before heading back to Nice.
This ride is one to do in the winter or spring months, when the roads near the seafront are not overly crowded and the temperatures in the mountains are still a bit on the cold side. You can find your way quite easily by following the coast road all the way out of Nice, through Villefranche-sur-mer and the other small places to Monaco. Monaco can be tricky, I recommend cycling through on a weekend or out of rush-hours as traffic can be intense. Look here for an easy way through Monaco to Menton. Once you are back in France at Roquebrune, follow the road to Menton and the seaside all the way to the Italian border. Cross it - while remembering to smile to the young police guys, who have to stand there all day, as you pedal through towards Ventigmiglia via the tunnel. Ventigmiglia can be a point of return in itself - however if you pass through the town via the mainroad near the station, you only have a few kilometers to go, before you reach the pretty village Dolceacqua. Follow the road North when you reach a roundabout just out of the town - and follow the main road. I once tried to follow the signs of a cycling path - finding myself after one kilometer or so on a gravel road in the industrial zone that was not really made for roadbikes! :-) Ciao Italia. In Dolceacqua time has in general been standing a bit still. One of our guides recently found probably one of the last physical phoneboxes still standing in the world. We are not sure whether it stills operates? You can pedal back the same way as you came, making it a nice flat pedal with some distance and rolling hills. Or you can discover the mountain roads around the area a bit further to dwell into the Italian mountainside before your return to France. Happy cycling! Tina Baltzer Lifesparkz Bike Tours Distance Nice - l'Escarène - Col de Braus (960m+) - Sospel - Menton - Nice: 90 km Climb: 1.560 m+ Main routes: Nice Est, D2204, D2566, the coast road Menton/Monaco/Nice. Close to: Lucéram, Col de Turini, Peille, Col de la Madone, Ventimiglia Level of difficulty: Moderate. Col de Braus climb is 10 km starting in L'Escarène, 6,4% average climb, 15% max climb. Season: Spring, Summer, Fall Tip: The restaurant serves cold beer at the top! Col de Braus is less known by visitors to Nice, but very well known by local cyclists, as a beautiful climb that you can ride as the challenge it serves in itself or combine with some of the other legendary climbs in the area of Sospel or la Vesubie valley. You can climb Col de Braus from L'Escarène or Sospel. Here, I describe departure from Nice and the L'Escarène side. If you stay in Nice, you take off from town and find your way North-East towards La Trinité and Drap. I have described the way here until Peille. Instead of making a right turn towards Peille at D53 however, continue via the D21 towards L'Escarène. You will travel along Le Paillon on a magnificent road along the river. L'Escarène is an idyllic typical Provence small town. Make a coffee stop at one of the cafés and take a few minutes to enjoy its charm. L'Escarène dates back to the 11th Century and it grew during the times where the Salt Road was built connecting Nice to Turin. It was one of the villages to stop in for travelers along the new Royal Road that was important for trade of salt and other goods during the 13-15th centuries between the Alps regions and the Mediterranean. Still today anchovies are an integral part of the Piedmont cuisine as a result of travelers from Cuneo in Valle Maira in Northern Italy, who went to work in the Sea region and brought back salty small fish to their kitchens. As you pass the bridge in L'Escarène, you start the climb to Col de Braus! This is what the way up looks like: The descend to Sospel is pretty as well. It is a bit technical however doable.
Sospel is another charming town where you also find good options for a coffee or lunch break. From Sospel out to the Sea front you still have a bit of rolling hills to climb as you follow the road to Menton. Follow the D2566. As you reach Menton all you have to do is follow the ocean road back to Nice. Ciao Ciao and happy cycling! Tina Baltzer Lifesparkz Bike Tours Distance Nice - Peille/return: 54 km Climb: 900 m+ Main routes: M2204 and D2564 (Grand Corniche) Close to: Col de la Madone, L’Escarène, Monaco, Menton Level of difficulty: Moderate - Col de St. Pancrace from La Grave de Peille 8,5 km 5,61% in average, 10% max. Season: Spring, Summer, Fall Tip: You can combine this climb with a climb to the final part of Col de la Madone from the West side: 3,5 km 8% in average, 10,5% max. Col de St. Pancrace is a very nice ride If you look for a few hours out on the bike from Nice and want to include a classic climb.
Head out of Nice by the major road that takes you North of Nice - it is flat and gives you an idea of what suburbs to Nice look like. They are not part of the glamor of the normal pictures of the Côte d'Azur. Here you see how some of the 'normal' people live as you pass through La Trinité, Drap and Cantaron. The road is very busy on workdays. Therefore I advice you to do this ride in a weekend. When you reach D21, make a right turn towards L'Escarène and Peille. Follow it for a bit, until you take D53 to your right. The first part of the ride is not really the most spectacular, but it is a nice stretch to warm up the legs before you reach La Grave de Peille: The start of the climb! The hairpin climb starts as a lot of climbs in the area do: with some quite high % climbing on the first sections. Make sure to find a good low gear to begin spinning with and save a bit of energy for the hairpins to come. It is not a very long climb, but it is a nice challenging one for the ones who want a good training. The road will take you through pretty olive groves and pass stone houses. Take in the silence and magnificent mountains that surround you. The road-stones tell you how many km you still have to go before you reach Peille and your altitude. Make a countdown to 665m. Before you know of it, you are in the beautiful mountain village Peille. You can make a stop and grab a drink - enter the old town by the lower terrain of the village. If you want to beat a Strava record, just pedal on. Pass through Peille to reach the top of the climb in St. Pancrace. It is a few turns away on the opposite site of Peille. It is an extremely picturesque route and there are very nice photo spots along this road! Continue towards La Turbie via D53. You can extend the climb by turning left after a few km - look for the road going up and roadsign to St. Agnes. From here there is about 4 km climb to the Col de La Madone. Had enough of climbing? Then continue by the curling road straight on and go back to Nice via la Turbie - Moyenne corniche or Grand Corniche/Col d'Eze. Have fun! :) Tina Baltzer Lifesparkz Bike Tours |
